Who am I?

I am a small village lost in the eastern Algarve between Estoí and São Bras d' Alportel, near Peral. My name comes from a plant that is found in abundance in my fields, myrtle. It is a thick shrub with an upright habit, arching with age. It can reach 300 years. The Greeks used it to decorate brides with crowns, as they still do today, and there are references in the Old Testament to this way of decorating brides as well. A digestive liquor called myrtle is produced by macerating the myrtle berries in alcohol, which gives it the healing properties of diseases of the mouth and digestive system. Along with the leaves and distilled flowers, water is used as a cosmetic, called angel water.
